Step 3: Check the microphone

  • If your headset has a Mute button, make sure it isn't active.
  • Make sure that your microphone or headset is connected correctly to your computer.
  • Increase the volume of your microphone.
  • Make sure that your microphone or headset is the system default recording device.
Here's how to do this in Windows 10:
  1. Select Start, then select Settings > System > Sound.
  2. In Input, ensure your microphone is selected in Choose your input device.
  3. To test your microphone, speak into it and check Test your microphone to make sure Windows is hearing you.

Step 4: Check your session and browser settings.

  • Are the audio controls on? A line through the icons means that a device is not enabled.
  • Are you using the latest version of Chrome? Update your browser.
  • Does the browser have permission to access your microphone?
  1. Select the audio/video icon in the URL bar to check the default audio settings.
  2. From the pop-up window, you can change devices or step through your device setup again to set the default devices. Note: You may need to refresh the page for the change to take effect.
Make sure you have the correct microphone selected in your session.

If you are using MacOS X 10.14 and higher, open your computer System Preferences and select Security & Privacy. Select Privacy. Make sure your browser is a selected app for the Microphone.

  • Open Chrome Preferences, select Advanced and Site Settings.
  • Select Microphone. Make sure the session is in the Allow list.
  • Select the View site information icon to the left of the URL to view site information and see if anything is blocked.
