1. Email encryption
To protect sensitive data that is emailed from an Academy email account, an email encryption tool has been installed. To encrypt the contents of an email, put the word [encrypt] (with the brackets) anywhere in the subject line of the email.
Examples:
- Health information summary [encrypt] -OR-
- [Encrypt] Banking account data
The recipient will receive the email to create an account in order to log in to see the contents of the encrypted email. This account can then be used to see subsequent encrypted emails. Social security numbers, bank account information and health information are to be considered sensitive data that should be sent in an encrypted email.
- Log in with your My Maritime credentials.
2. Email spoofing
To combat email spoofing, a security change has been made to the Academy's email system. Email spoofing is a key piece of Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams, which have caused financial losses for many companies over the past few years. Being able to stop spoofed email messages before they are delivered can also reduce email spam and email phishing attempts.
